Wristcutters: A Love Story
It feels like every year, there is at least one stand out indie film (Garden State, Napoleon Dynamite etc…). Sometimes they become huge; such as the previous mentioned movies. Other times they go unnoticed; such as Wristcutters: A Love Story.
I had seen movie posters for this flick a while back, but it didn’t peak my interest enough to warrant venturing to the theater to catch a screening. The other night, Rain and I, in an attempt to conquer boredom once and for all (we got all caught up on Hell’s Kitchen), decided to see what was available via iTunes movie rentals. Long story short we came upon WC and decided to give it a shot.
The basic story is Zia, a twenty-something goober, decides to off himself after things go south with his lady-friend, Desiree. This is when things get really fun for the movie. The idea is that punishment for killing yourself is living in a world exactly like the one on earth just shittier. Everyone in this world has an understanding of where they are and why they are there which makes for some funny conversations between the “locals”. Zia befriends the russian musician, Eugene. Eventually Zia finds out that Desiree offed herself a month after he did, and decides to go find her. The bulk of the movie is the road trip Zia and Eugene partake in with their hitch-hiking companion, Mikal, whom is looking for the P.I.C. (People In Charge).
I loved this movie. The way the suicide-world is depicted is really fun. It kind of reminded me of the ghost world in Beetlejuice, only not over the top. The acting is very good and compliments the real dialogue. A great mix of humor and heart-tugging moments. Definitely check this one out.
