They’re speaking generally. I ride a fixed gear bike and do so for most of the reasons mentioned in Rework. They’re definitely less maintenance. Anything that has needed to be done (which hasn’t been much) I was able to do myself. Everyone I know with a more technical bike usually has to take it in and pay to have it maintenanced. It takes some getting used to, but I wouldn’t say they’re more dangerous if you still use brakes (which I do). Anyway, to nitpick on their fixie analogy is to miss the point.
